What the Durability Update Means for LoL:

Riot is looking to support more team fights7 and extended firefights with the Durability Update. How will this change affect the current game meta?

Players are now preparing for what could be the most significant and disruptive update for every League of Legends account. Patch 12.10 will launch very soon and will bring the Durability update. The change would greatly affect LoL gameplay and player strategy. What does the update mean for MOBA?

Durability change in patch 12.10

The update will make each champion much tankier by increasing their base HP, increasing their health, increasing their armor, and increasing their magic resistance. In contrast to these stat increases, healing and protection power have been reduced to accommodate the changes.

Here are more specific details on the changes to these champions that players with LoL accounts should expect:

Base Health:

Increased by 70

Health per level:

increased by 14

Armor per level:

increased by 1.2

Magic resistance per level:

increased by 0.8

Champion Healing:

reduced by 10-28%

Champion Healing:

Reduced by 10%

In addition to these changes to champion stats, several item effects will also have a big impact on their effectiveness. Item healing and shielding and Grievous’ damage status effect will also be primarily reduced.

Here are more detailed league item changes:

Item Healing:

Reduced by 10-28%

Item Shielding:

Reduced by 10%

Base Heavy Wound:

from 40% to 30%

Improved Heavy Wound:

from 60% to 50%

Aside from these stat reductions, champions’ base stats aren’t the only things getting buffs. Turrets will also get increased damage output to accommodate the fact that champions will be stronger. At the same time, Baron Nashor will pack more punch after the update. These AD changes ensure that players won’t be able to complete these objectives too easily.

Here are the tower change numbers and BR damage:

Inner turret attack damage:

from 170-305 to 187-427

Nexus Turret Attack Damage:

from 150-280 to 165-405

Baron Nashor’s attack damage:

from 125 + 8 per minute to 150 + 10 per minute

The reason for the durability update

Riot monitored the state of the game and found that burst champions had become too dominant. Assassins have seen a surge in their use, despite their scarcity in professional games. These characters often see little resistance against squished backlines along with certain mage champions.

The main problem with these characters is the lack of counterplay or strategies against fed assassins and burst mages. When these champions can get an early lead in their lanes, their roaming potential puts too much pressure on squished units on the bottom. Burst champions can effectively shut down the bot lane and one-shot the most crumpled units, making them useless for the rest of the game.

The problem with this situation is that this type of strategy removes the team nature of the game. A shock assassin or mage that quickly shuts down the backline offers no chance of counterplay. This low survivability situation was described by Riot as something that “makes for sudden and confusing teamfights and skirmishes when champions die so quickly.”

What does the durability update mean for League of Legends?

Aside from the obvious damage mitigation against burst champions, the changes to durability hope to encourage cooperation, expanded team fights, and more thoughtful maneuvers. Increasing HP, Armor and MR stats will give players more options to react to specific attacks. Here’s a quick rundown of what Riot expects from the update:

  • Tougher and tankier champions provide higher survivability
  • Burst champions need to spend more resources
  • Burst champions need to be far ahead to allow for one-shot combo attacks
  • Multiple avenues for counter play and counter strategies
  • More extended firefights and team fights

While Assassins and Mages will not be denied their burst abilities, they will have to invest more resources to ensure they can perform these attacks. This setup means that players playing these characters will need to hit most, if not all, of their skill hits or be ahead in stats to secure one-shot combos. This situation will reward experienced players and punish those who do not plan carefully.

Players are skeptical about the durability update

While the ramifications of this update remain to be seen, some players are already concerned about the changes as they will essentially change the meta and the way the game is played. Fortunately, Riot said they will monitor the performance and stats of the general population as they move forward with this plan. They said they would make the appropriate changes depending on how things turned out.

While it’s unclear how much the game landscape will change, it’s clear that the Durability update will significantly affect the way skirmishes and teamfights are conducted in the game. Additionally, players can no longer rely on champions to get quick elo boosts for ranked matches. Hopefully Riot will be able to properly monitor these changes to make the right buffs and nerfs when necessary.
